“My ticker is tougher now – what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger, and that’s just made us a lot stronger.”

The words of red-hot Perth Wildcat’s coach Scott Fisher after his team’s nail-biting win over the Brisbane Bullets in Brisbane on Sunday night.

“Honestly, I really didn’t care if we won or not by the end – we showed such great heart that the win was just the sweet gravy on top,” Fisher said. “To play against them at their place, missing Paul, coming back from that deficit ... it was just unbelievable.”

Brisbane opened up a game-high 14-point margin (74-60) in the third stanza, but the Cats then scored 30 of the final 43 points.

Perth Wildcats coach Scott Fisher says the key to Friday night’s win was to sprint out of the blocks.

Fisher said the emphasis pre-match had been to get off to a good start, both in the match and for the season.

“I think it’s very important, really,” he said. “We’ve been together for a while, and we’ve worked very hard, and it’s great to get that reward for that hard work.

“They played the other night, they had to make the trip overseas – this is our home ground, and in my first two years, we did pretty well on the road, and we weren’t as good as we should have been at home.

“We need to be better at home, and when the crowd shows up, and they wear their red, we need to make a point of doing the right thing.

Tony Ronaldson and Darren Brooks have combined for 43 points to lead the Perth Wildcats to a comfortable 94-82 win over the Singapore Slingers in round one of the 2006/07 Philips Championship at Challenge Stadium in Perth on Friday night.

The Wildcats asserted their dominance from the outset, racing away to a 19-point half-time lead before holding off a spirited Slingers outfit in the second-half to open their season on a winning note.

Ronaldson was on fire from the arc in the opening term before finishing the match with 20 points, while Brooks impressed on debut for the Cats with 23 points and showed he is more than capable of filling in the boots of the departed David Bailey.

Shawn Redhage continued his fine form from last season and chipped in with 16 points, also proving crucial in the win.

For the Slingers, Mike Helms fought his heart out all night and top-scored with 24 points but lacked genuine support when the game was on the line, with Marquin Chandler (16 pts) and Ben Melmeth (13 pts) only hitting double figures in the final term.

Guard Brad Robbins has been signed to a full playing contract with the red-hot Perth Wildcats and will play in tonight’s season opener against the Singapore Slingers.

The upgrading from a development player to a full contract means that he is as eligible to play games for the Cats as any other contracted player.

The feisty guard, already nicknamed ‘Angry Ant’ by supporters for his unbelievable defensive pressure and who gained a cult following when the team was in Taiwan, is sure to become a crowd favourite as he gives his all in his minutes on court.

The 21- year-old, who played for Cairns a couple of years ago, had a year away from the NBL, but decided to try his luck with the league again this season and is obviously thrilled with the results.

“I’ve been working hard in the off-season, and Scott (Fisher, coach) said to me ‘hang in there and keep working hard, and good things may come of it’, and they certainly have,” he said.

Perth Wildcats coach SCOTT FISHER has called for all fans attending home games this season to wear red clothing to the games.

The Cats’ new home uniform is a striking red, and Fisher wants Challenge Stadium to be a sea of red when the first game tips-off on in a couple of days.

“We’re red-hot, and I think trying to get some unity in the stands, both audibly and visually, has got to be something that would be intimidating to our opponents,” he said.

“Red is obviously a very striking colour, and that’s what we intend to do – strike and be aggressive.”

The NBL Players’ Choice Poll released on Wednesday revealed Challenge Stadium as the toughest venue to play in around the league, and FISHER said the crowd could increase the pressure even more.

Basketball
Coach denies Ronaldson rift
August 30, 2006 PERTH coach Scott Fisher dismissed speculation today that there was a rift between him and former Wildcats captain Tony Ronaldson.
The rift rumour overshadowed the National Basketball League club's announcement that dual Olympian Paul Rogers would replace the experienced Ronaldson as captain for the 2006-2007 season.
Fisher admitted Ronaldson - a veteran of 542 NBL games - wanted to remain as captain, but he said the former Boomers forward, 34, had vowed to support Rogers.
