Perth Wildcats coach Scott Fisher says the key to Friday night’s win was to sprint out of the blocks.

Fisher said the emphasis pre-match had been to get off to a good start, both in the match and for the season.

“I think it’s very important, really,” he said. “We’ve been together for a while, and we’ve worked very hard, and it’s great to get that reward for that hard work.

“They played the other night, they had to make the trip overseas – this is our home ground, and in my first two years, we did pretty well on the road, and we weren’t as good as we should have been at home.

“We need to be better at home, and when the crowd shows up, and they wear their red, we need to make a point of doing the right thing.

“It’s a lot easier to play in front at home, so getting out to a big start was important for us.”

The skills and decision-making dropped off as the team tired, but Fisher said the hustle was still evident.

“The last quarter wasn’t ... really, the second half wasn’t great basketball by us – we didn’t shoot as well, we had a few more turnovers.

“Offensively we sputtered a bit, but I think for the most part that our defence was solid, and the guys were working hard, and that’s always going to give us a chance.

“It was sort of unfortunate, I thought, that the margin was only 12 points, because it felt like we really controlled that game the whole way.”

New import guard Darren Brooks played what was clearly his best game since arriving at the club, and Tony Ronaldson was brilliant in the first term to ensure the team got the start they wanted.

“Certainly Darren Brooks had a great game, he shot the ball very well and was under control on his dribbles and passed the ball well tonight, and defensively I thought he did a pretty good job, and I know he can play better, that part of his game can certainly get better.

“Shawn (Redhage) worked very hard tonight for a decent result, Tony got off to a great first half and really set the tone for us, Paul (Rogers) played like a champion and led like a captain should.

“Adam did a great job leading in the beginning, and he probably won’t like his game offensively, but he used the ball pretty well and had a good assist-to-turnover ratio, so really the starters played quite well.”
