Mount Vernon High graduate Troy DeVries is headed to Germany to continue his basketball career

Troy DeVries has some basketball left in him.

The former Mount Vernon High player, who had a successful career at the University of New Mexico, will play professionally in Karlsruhe, Germany.

"I get to make a living doing what I love to do most," said DeVries. "That's play basketball."

DeVries and his wife Stephanie will be in Germany from August through May.

BG Karlsruhe will play 60 games in the Bundesliga first division, which is the top league in Germany.

The season will be longer than what DeVries is used to. New Mexico played 33 games last season.

"I'm not worried about it," he said. "I have the work ethic and I've trained for it. I think my body will be able to withstand the long season."

DeVries has hardly let up on basketball since New Mexico's season came to end in March with a loss to Villanova in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

He lifts weights about four days a week, works on individual drills two days a week and plays pick-up games with the New Mexico team every day.

DeVries was doing all that even before signing a contract Friday with BG Karlsruhe.

"Sometimes you wonder if it is all for nothing," said DeVries. "But I love game. I enjoy playing and I enjoy working out."

Not long after the college season, DeVries thought he was going to land a spot on a team in Australia.

But when that fell through, he went looking at his other options.

He played in a showcase tournament in New Jersey in May, where 50 top college seniors put their games on display for agents and scouts.

It was there that DeVries signed with an agent, who told DeVries he had the ability to play in Europe.

"Doubt definitely crept in a little bit," DeVries said of failing to hook on in Australia. "There are always challenges that are going to come your way.

But I kept doing what I was doing and everything came through."

After the opportunity in Australia went away — the team chose another player

— DeVries felt he would have other opportunities to play professionally.

Going overseas was his top choice, but he felt he could fall back on a NBA Development League team in Albuquerque or an American Basketball Association team in Gallup, N.M.

When the offer came to play in Germany, DeVries jumped at it.

"A different opportunity could have come, but this was the first one and it was a good first-year contract," he said.

"I chose this one and decided not to wait."

DeVries, who graduated with a degree in communications,

isn't sure how long he will continue to play basketball.

He turns 23 today and has been married for two years.

"It's going to really depend on how the first year goes,

" he said. "If my wife enjoys it and I enjoy it, then I'd love to do it as long as I can."
